…that is because, in 1988, the game was given new graphics and transformed into Super Mario Bros. 2 for the USA & Europe!
The original Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 was considered to be too hard for American players so this new version was created instead.
Later, the original Super Mario Bros. 2 was released outside Japan as ‘The Lost Levels’ and Japanese gamers got to the play the US/European version as Super Mario Bros. USA!
