This summer, we’re inviting you to play, create and learn together as three of the Museum’s most popular exhibits are freshly revamped for the summer holidays.
The Arcade, The Lab and our Made In Sheffield exhibit will be celebrated in three distinct stages throughout the summer holidays, showcasing brand new interpretations, object displays and fun new activities for all ages to enjoy.

Play Together: Explore our new look Arcade as we showcase a narrative focus on how arcades became vibrant social spaces in the 1980’s and early 1990’s.
> Explore the history of arcades from the 1970’s to 2000’s in our newly revamped Arcade section
> Play Tempest, a vector based graphics shooter game from 1981, newly introduced to the Arcade
> Top the leader board in Space Invaders (1978) with our high-score competition
> Take a deep dive into how arcade joysticks work in our object handling activities
> Design your own mini arcade cabinet in our fun paper craft activity
Create Together: Who makes videogames? Everyone! The Lab area showcases how anyone of all ages from any background can make, create and design videogames.
> Play games unique to the NVM, including the super popular Super Snowball Fight Party and 4 Player Pac-Man
> Revisit the 1980’s classroom with a real working BBC Micro computer
> Design your own videogames using web based game making software Scratch and Twine
> Explore how board games have been inspired by videogames by playing a 1980’s Donkey Kong board game
> Create together and design your own board games based on your favourite videogames
Learn Together: Explore Sheffield’s rich gaming heritage as we shine a light on forty years of history, that all began with Gremlin Graphics. You’ll also be able to test your (virtual) boxing skills in their newly introduced heavyweight title, ‘Undisputed’.
> Explore Sheffield’s gaming heritage through playable games, new displays and unique objects including Sumo Digital’s actual BAFTA Award
> Play a range of games made in the Steel City such as Zool, Gang Beasts, Sackboy and Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing
> Play a beta version of ‘Undisputed’, a brand new boxing game from Steel City Interactive before it’s official October release
> Write your own videogame jingle using a BBC:Microbit inspired by the Gremlin Graphics videogame ‘Wanted: Monty Mole’
> Design your own costumes for Sackboy or Gang Beasts in fun arts and crafts activities
