A speedy, side-scrolling platform game in the mould of Sonic, Zool was a huge-success and remains much-loved and was made right here in Sheffield!

The game was released for a host of different systems including the Commodore Amiga and Mega Drive. The Museum features the SNES version which you can play in our Made In Sheffield exhibit. 

Created in Sheffield by Gremlin Graphics, the lead character is not only the ‘Ninja of the Nth Dimension’, but one of the defining videogames of the 1990s.

Interesting Facts

  • It was marketed as a rival to SEGA’s Sonic The Hedgehog. The game similarly relies on smooth, fast moving gameplay.

 

  • The game was heavily hyped for its initial release and was bundled with the newly launched Amiga 1200.

 

  • The game was followed by a sequel in 1993. A remastered version of the original, titled Zool Redimensioned, released in 2021. This was developed by Sheffield’s Sumo Digital Academy.
The SNES version of Zool is playable in our in our Made in Sheffield exhibit.
