Health and Safety Policy & School Visit Guidance

It is expected that all visiting educational groups prepare their own Risk Assessment for their visit. You can view the NVM’s Site Risk Assessment here to assist with this. The NVM also has Public Liability Insurance.

All our staff have undergone a standard police check. Staff working directly with students have undergone a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Staff in the hands-on galleries or delivering educational events have relevant experience and training. For information about our safeguarding and recruitment policy please see our Letter of Assurance.

The National Videogame Museum is a unique venue which allows visitors to play with a wide range of games, some of which are rare and valuable. We expect adult group leaders to remain with and to supervise their students or group at all times during their visit.

Before your visit, please discuss appropriate conduct with your students or group members. If their behaviour impacts the safety of other members of the public, our staff members or our exhibits, we may ask this individual to leave. Whilst this is hopefully very unlikely, please have a contingency plan in place should this occur during your visit.

Please make sure you have the correct adult-to-student ratio for your visit to the museum:

Primary & Secondary Schools – 8:1

College and University – 10:1

If students require 1:1 supporting adults these are also free of charge.

Payment should be made a minimum of 21 days in advance and bookings are not secure until payment is received. We offer payment by invoice on request.

Bookings can be cancelled free of charge with 21 days notice. A charge of 50% is applied for cancellations after this point or 100% for anything less than 48 hours notice.

We will do our best to accommodate all rescheduling requests if made with 21 days notice.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your booking please get in touch with our Learning Team as soon as possible.

Students are welcome to visit the gift shop, and must be supervised by a teacher, parent or guardian. We advise that supervising adults bring students to visit the gift shop in smaller groups due the small size of the space. We take both cash and cards.

The museum is based in Sheffield City Centre in the Castle House Building. We do not have parking spaces for buses or cars, but there is temporary parking for dropping off and picking up groups just in front of the building. Coach Drivers are welcome to wait inside the museum for free.

Alternatively, the NVM is about a 10 minute walk from Sheffield Train Station. Castle Square tram stop is adjacent to the museum.

We are easily accessible by bus, use the Travel South Yorkshire journey planner to help you get here.
