Nowadays, many games use digital-only distribution. In the past, a master copy of a finished game was sent to publishers to print copies for sale. Many of these master copies were stored on gold-coloured CD-Rs and CD-ROMs. Gold is less susceptible to corrosion than aluminium, so gold was used as the reflective layer in some discs for high-quality data storage. This led to the expression ‘gone gold’ to describe the point when a game’s development is finished and the game is ready for certification and mass production.
This gold disc contains the master copy of Doom II, which released on MS-DOS in 1994 and Mac OS in 1995. The disc has been autographed by a number of members of the development team, including designers Shawn Green, American McGee, and John Romero; artists Adrian Carmack and Kevin Cloud; programmer Dave Taylor; and composer Robert Prince.
