Together We Play

This summer we’re handing our gallery over to players and fans in a unique exhibition that puts personal videogame stories, memories and collections centre stage. Explore powerful player stories through a mix of newly commissioned artwork, remarkable personal collections, and interactive experiences.

The exhibition is supported by The BFI National Lottery Screen Heritage Fund.

Launching Saturday 18th July!

Playing

Discover the games that have shaped people’s lives through stories of childhood favourites, unforgettable gaming moments, and the friendships and communities formed through play.

  • Explore a specially commissioned mural, created by Sheffield artist William Exley, that celebrates player stories and memories, collected from hundreds of conversations with players and fans across the UK.
  • Step back in time and play Doom (1993) with your friends in our 90’s themed play space
  • Explore what it means to be a gamer  in our showcase of the ‘Do I Look Like a Gamer?’ campaign by Mayamada
  • Challenge your friends and family to a Mario Kart Wii battle
  • Discover stories from the people of Sheffield through our Sheffield of Stories exhibition, developed in collaboration with Sheffield Docfest and Minecraft artist Adam Clarke.

Making

Explore the creativity inspired by videogames, from fan art and crafts to cosplay and other forms of self-expression that celebrate beloved characters, worlds, and experiences.

  • Explore the ways people celebrate a passion for a character or videogame, through costume creation. Artwork by Peony Gent celebrates the creativity and craftsmanship of cosplay culture, captured live at MCM Comic Con.
  • Relive the past and explore Sheffield Miniatures artist Lee Smithson’s meticulously crafted miniature 1980s living room, complete with an iconic Commodore 64.

“Videogames matter to me because they bring joy to me, and they bring people together in a way that other things can’t do. In a competitive way, in fun ways, and all the above.”
