Hatching Plans for Easter

Alongside over 100 playable videogames and unique exhibitions, children and adults alike will be able to dive into ‘eggs-citing’ drop-in workshops during the Easter holidays.

Program a virtual pet and take part in activities centring around Dizzy, the anthropomorphic egg. The character is famous for starring in over twenty videogames designed by British developers, The Oliver Twins.

Program a Virtual Pet

Influenced by Dizzy and the egg shaped Tamagotchi’s (the digital virtual pet that took the late 1990’s by storm), visitors will be able to design and program a virtual pet themselves.

Using arts and crafts and intuitive, yet easily accessible coding software with a BBC Micro:Bit, visitors can bring a virtual pet to life! Shake it to make noises, create lines of code to make it laugh and smile or program it to say hello.

The creative possibilities are ideal for developing vital educational STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering Arts and Mathematics) skills.

Fantasy World Dizzy (a.k.a. Dizzy III)

Dizzy Corner

In the same room as the drop-in workshops there will be ‘Dizzy Corner’. Throughout the Easter period two of Dizzy’s greatest adventures will be playable for the first time at the NVM.

Relive Dizzy’s attempt to rescue his girlfriend Daisy from the King Troll in the ZX Spectrum version of Fantasy World Dizzy (a.k.a. Dizzy III). Also playable will be his 1991 adventure, Fantastic Dizzy, on the Sega Mega Drive. There will also be a display of many of Dizzy’s games from the Museum’s collection showcasing an often forgotten format – the cassette tape.

This corner of history will resonate with older visitors where they can share and introduce these classics to a younger generation to enjoy.

Videogame Easter Eggs

What’s your favourite videogame Easter egg? The Konami Cheat Code? GTA Vice City’s Chocolate Easter Egg? The secret room in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past? Naughty Dog game references in The Last of Us?

Inspired by one of the first ever known ‘Easter Eggs’ in Atari’s 1979 classic Adventure, where its creator Warren Robinett embedded his name in the game in the form of a hidden and virtually inaccessible room, there will be the opportunity for visitors to share their favourite videogame Easter Eggs with the museum.

The best Easter Eggs shared will appear on the NVM’s social media pages. We’ll discuss the Easter Egg in more detail and its purpose within that specific videogame.
