Iconic 1993 hit Sim City 2000 and Sheffield’s Sackboy: A Big Adventure are among several games to make their debut. They will be accompanied by brand new activities designed by our award winning Learning Team.

A New Way to Explore

Fast Travel introduces three new trails to explore the UK’s only museum dedicated to videogames. Discover big-name games made in Sheffield and surrounding neighbours on the ‘Local Line’. Discover games such as Boneloaf’s Gang Beasts (Sheffield), Sumo Digital’s Sackboy: A Big Adventure (Sheffield) and Team 17’s Worms (Wakefield).

Alternatively, the ‘Real World Trail’, showcases videogames with picture perfect recreations of ancient Greece, 1980’s Japan and Sheffield’s very own Bramall Lane. Or maybe take the family on an Out Of This World journey exploring fantastical lands and alien worlds.

Other Places

Also on display are games such as Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption and Assassin’s Creed, which are discussed for the first time in the Museum as part of ‘Other Places’. Curated by Andy Kelly, ‘Other Places’ is an exhibition of short films celebrating the artistry of videogame worlds and environments.

NVM curator Emily Theodore Marlow says: “We’re thrilled to be able to bring such a beautiful series of films to the museum for the first time. Projects like this allow us to demonstrate the amazing skill and digital mastery that goes into building open world games like GTA, Red Dead Redemption and Yakuza.”

A World of Activities

The Fast Travel programme of activities also includes the opportunity to craft buildings and design landscapes to contribute to a giant ‘World Building’ map every day and, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, children and adults alike will have the opportunity to program a mini robot. Design a route to traverse coded trails to make the robot move, twirl and even change colour!

Cat Powell, Director of Visitor Experience at the NVM says: “We’re so excited for Fast Travel this summer and can’t wait to welcome visitors to the Museum. The activities and exhibits on display this holiday are a brand new take on gaming and how visitors interact with our space. Those visiting us will be put in charge of how they explore our collection and the many unique journeys they can take!”
