It’s-a-me, Mario!

The Italian plumber is a global icon. Created by the legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Super Mario could be considered to be the modern foundation of Nintendo. Always ready to rescue Princess Peach from his archenemy Bowser, Mario first appeared in Donkey Kong (1981) and has since appeared in over 200 titles.

Through our collection, we showcase how Mario games have evolved across 40 years of platforming perfection and damsel-in-distress rescue.

Mario in the Museum

We have a number of playable games featuring Mario dotted throughout our gallery. Can you find them all? To get you started, we’re spotlighting some of our favourites below.

Super Mario Bros.

It wasn’t the first platform game, and it wasn’t even the first appearance of Mario in a videogame, but the 32 levels in Super Mario Bros. certainly broke new ground and continues to inspire and challenge today.
