The Next Level Project

The Next Level project was a course aimed to enable women of colour aged 18-25 to get into creating videogames. The free course provided by The National Videogame Museum saw 2 hour workshops take place over a space of six weeks. The workshops provided activities on learning about games and how to develop key areas. These included art and animation, storytelling, games design and basic coding. The participants also had an insight to the various career pathways in the industry.

By the end of the course all our participants had designed their very own game.

About the Course

The workshops saw a safe space for all the participants to learn. They received one-to-one support and careers guidance and an accreditation certificate on completion. They were also gifted a laptop by Laptops for All so they can continue to develop their skills.

One of the graduates has now joined a coding bootcamp, whilst another has begun a web design and coding course at The Sheffield College. Another wants to develop a career in videogame design after completing her English and Maths studies. And another has started looking for a job in IT.

One of the young women who took part in the project said, “I have really enjoyed being in a new place and learning new things. Being in a new country and not knowing Sheffield, it has helped my confidence.”

Celebrating Success

On the 15th July 2022, all of our amazing participants from The Next Level project celebrated their success after embarking on their six week games design course. They received certificates and laptops to highlight their achievements from the project.

About Laptops for All

Laptops for All were founded in 202 and have sourced more than 15,000 devices for communities across the North of England.

Laptops for All works with local charities including Age UK, The Food Works and Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care and the local NHS to distribute devices and data according to need.
